STRIKEFORCE QUOTABLES: Herschel Walker discusses January 29 show, opponent Scott Carson

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

WalkerHershel_MK150b_12.jpg

"Scott [Carson], there's not much film on him and I haven't really seen him fight. I told Bob Cook and the people at Strikeforce that I wanted an experienced fighter and someone that has been fighting for a while because I really, really respect MMA a lot and I wanted this to be a great fight. They picked a guy with a lot of experience, he hadn't been fighting that much, and people had been coming down on him. I said guys you can't do that because when I was in the gym, not worrying about fighting, I was learning a lot more at that time. I said Scott Carson has been training for a long, long time so I might've bitten off more than I can chew. I want to make it a great fight. On the card on the 29th they've got a lot of great fights. The Diaz brothers are some of the finest fighters I've ever seen and I actually love the way they fight. [Nick Diaz] is really going to put on a great show. Then Robbie Lawler, he has been doing really, really well, for him to fight Jacare is gonna be an exciting fight. Then Trevor Pringley who is from the AKA as well, I'm excited to see him fight and he's fighting probably one of the best jiu jitsu fighters in the world today."

-Herschel Walker talks to KNBR in San Francisco with Murph and Mac (transcribed by SportsRadioInterviews.com) about his opponent for Strikeforce's January 29 show in San Jose, Scott Carson, and the fight card itself.

Penick's Analysis: Walker has taken this sport, and everything that goes along with it, seriously from day one, and it's very commendable. The man is in supreme shape at 48 years old, and he knows that, despite Carson's inactivity, he's in for another athletic challenge on January 29. He may bring some more viewers to Showtime for Strikeforce in this one, but it depends on if the novelty of him in MMA remains for people who tuned in to see him last January. Still, Walker's respect for the sport is great to see, and while you can question the television time being given to a 48-year-old in his second MMA fight, he's at least going about this endeavor in the best possible way for him.

It?s been a long, hard road back to divisional relevancy for former ufc Lightweight Champion Sean Sherk. Cesar Gracie on Nick Diaz-Mayhem Miller, Greg Jackson and Batista

Strikeforce welterweight champion Nick Diaz is about 10 days from his title defense against Evangelista "Cyborg" Santos. If most fans had their way, Diaz would be fighting Jason "Mayhem" Miller that night.

The rivalry between Diaz and Miller exploded last April, when the two were among the participants in a post-fight brawl following Jake Shields' championship win over Dan Henderson.

On Wednesday's edition of The MMA Hour, Diaz's manager and trainer Cesar Gracie explained why the matchup has yet to happen.
