UFC NEWS: Matt Hamill vs. Phil Davis headed to UFC 129 in Toronto

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

A big light heavyweight bout is coming to the UFC 129 event in Toronto, as multiple published reports state that Phil Davis will take a step up in competition to face Matt Hamill on the card.

Davis is one of the more exciting prospects in the division, rattling off eight straight victories to begin his career. Four of those appearances came in the UFC in 2010, and in his most recent fight, at UFC 123 in November, he submitted Tim Boetsch with a modified hammerlock dubbed the "Mr. Wonderful" after the event.

Hamill, meanwhile, continued his winning ways in October when he defeated former coach and mentor Tito Ortiz at UFC 121. The win was technically his fifth straight, though one of those was the bout against Jon Jones that ended in disqualification due to illegal blows from Jones, after Hamill had been beaten soundly for much of the fight. But with wins over Keith Jardine and Ortiz in 2010, Hamill is looking to break into the top 10 of the division.

UFC 129 airs live on pay-per-view from the Rogers Centre in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, headlined by a Welterweight Championship bout between Georges St. Pierre and Jake Shields.

Penick's Analysis: This is a very good light heavyweight fight, and a chance for Davis to make a big leap in the division himself. With Jon Jones getting a shot to break into the title picture in his bout with Ryan Bader, Davis has a chance to work his way up into the mix in a big way if he can get past Hamill. This is also a chance for Hamill to prove he belongs in the top end of the division himself, and this should be a very good, very important fight for both in the division.

UFC NEWS: Brothers Jim and Dan Miller both get fights in front of hometown crowd at UFC 128 in New Jersey

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

Brothers Jim and Dan Miller will both get an opportunity to fight in front of a hometown crowd on March 19, as they will each compete on the UFC 128 card at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.

Jim's previously reported bout with WEC-import Kamal Shalorus has been made official by the organization, and multiple reports state that Dan will meet Nick Catone on the card.

Dan has had a rough few years, but has gotten his MMA career back on track with consecutive victories. The wins find him bouncing back after a rough three fight losing skid that coincided with some serious personal tragedies at home, but after submitting John Salter and earning a decision over Joe Doerksen, Miller will return home to New Jersey for the his first fight in the state in three years.

Catone will attempt to halt that streak in his first fight in 15 months. He halted a two fight skid of his own at UFC Fight Night 20 last January, but numerous injuries sidelined him throughout the last year. He's 2-2 in four appearances in the UFC.

UFC 128 is set to air live on pay-per-view, headlined by a Light Heavyweight Championship bout between Mauricio "Shogun" Rua and Rashad Evans.

Penick's Analysis: This is another winnable fight for the elder Miller in the middleweight division, especially with the lengthy injury layoff that Catone's been subject to in the last year. It's cool for both brothers that they'll get to compete on the same event, and it's not something that happens often. Both Joe and Dan Lauzon got the chance to fight together at UFC 108 last year, but Dan wasn't around with the organization by August to fight in front of a hometown crowd with Joe like the Miller brothers will have here. It will be a cool atmosphere for both of them, and both should have pretty good fights.

Fedor: A Humble Star In A Cast Of Great Warriors

Eric Nichol sent along the following:

The deal is done; the stage is set; the time is fast approaching: three clichés that fans around the world have been eagerly waiting to hear. On February 12th, when the first bell sounds to kick off what is being widely considered as the greatest heavyweight tournament in mixed martial arts history, it?s in proper fashion that the assembled cast of superstars set to collide in the single-elimination brackets include Fedor Emelianenko.

Widely considered one of the greatest, if not THE greatest, heavyweight fighter in the sport?s history, Emelianenko?s unprecedented run of 28 consecutive victories spanning nearly a decade of fighting marked the Stary Oskol, Russia native as a true ambassador for what ?sportsmanship? was meant to define in MMA.

With the world reeling after his shocking upset loss to Fabricio Werdum this past June, a humble man considered to be the most dangerous human being on the planet spoke to the media with a quote that embodies a warrior?s heart and humility: ?A man that does not fall, does not stand up.? A truly inspirational message from the mild-mannered athlete which succinctly described his acceptance that the streak was over and the time for a new battle was imminent on the horizon. At the time, no one could have predicted that the horizon included his position in a tournament of such epic proportions.

In the main event of M-1 Global and Strikeforce?s co-promoted event from the IZOD Center in East Rutherford, New Jersey, Emelianenko (31-2, 1 NC) is set to take on Antonio Silva (15-2) in the evening?s second quarterfinal fight of the three-stage, single-elimination tournament. With all eight participants equally talented, no fighter is receiving a free pass to advance to the semi-finals and Silva represents a true threat in his own right as a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt winning eight of his last nine; all but two of his victories have come by knockout with only five tilts venturing past five minutes.

But the great Fedor Emelianenko has fought some the most recognizable names in the sport as well; men like Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, Mirko ?Cro Cop? Filipovic, Andrei Arlovski and Mark ?The Hammer? Coleman and has defeated many of his rival superstars in devastating first-round fashions of his own. Clearly the heavyweight tournament of 2011 represents a new era of increasingly talented, hybridized mixed martial artists and marks a new challenge for Emelianenko, who is as stoic and ready as he has ever been. ?I have been training very hard since my last fight and eager to get back inside the cage. Strikeforce has assembled a roster filled with the best heavyweights in the world and I?m blessed to have the opportunity to fight them in a great tournament format.?

With only one other official loss to his record resulting from a doctor stoppage due to an early cut against Tsuyoshi Kosaka during their December, 2000 bout, Fedor seized the opportunity to avenge the blemish nearly five years later with his own first-round TKO of Kosaka at a PRIDE Fighting Championships event. If the brackets play out in favour of Fedor?s fans, Emelianenko could face Werdum later this year and provide yet another grand stage to avenge his second career loss within the tournament. But following in the humble footsteps of Emelianenko, fans will wait in earnest for the clock to tick down to February 12th and play out the ?what-if? scenarios at the close of this legendary tournament?s first bouts.

Phan gives ?how to? video on MMA judging

A rematch between Nam Phan and Leonard Garcia is set for Ultimate Fight Night 24 in Seattle, March 26th. Phan-Garcia II is a result of suspect judging in their initial encounter in which Garcia won the match but many, including Joe Rogan, believed Phan earned the decision.
