Georges St. Pierre Training With Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Black Belts Roger Gracie And Braulio Estima

UFC Welterweight Champion Georges St. Pierre is one of the best in the sport of MMA, in part because he has become a true mixed martial artist.  Whereas early in his career he mostly relied on explosiveness, athleticism, and his Kyokushin Karate background, nowadays he is as weakness-free as they get.  We’re talking about a fighter with amazing wrestling [...]

Volkmann Suspended With Pay From High School Wrestling Coach Gig While Administrators 'Investigate' Obama Comments

(Volkmann got Obama'ed on The Tonight Show)

Jacob Volkmann will likely think twice next time about cracking a joke about wanting to ground and pound the Commander in Chief of the United States.

The UFC lightweight, who made headlines when the Secret Service paid him a visit to question him about post-UFC 125 comments he made about wanting to go a few rounds with President Barack Obama so he could show him what he thought of his healthcare policy.

It now appears that the tongue-in-cheek soundbite he fed Ariel Helwani got him more than just a spot on The Tonight Show and Fox Business News

Volkmann was informed this week that he has been temporarily suspended with pay from his assistant wrestling coach position he has held for the past several years at White Bear Lake Area High School, pending an investigation of his remarks about Obama by the school administrators.

The 30-year-old Minnesota chiropractor who owns his own practice also serves as the volunteer head coach of the town's elementary school wrestling team, but was told that his non-paid coaching position was not at risk.

UFC set to announce TUF 13 coaches: Who will it be?

The UFC hasn't always been the most airtight unit in keeping big announcements a secret, but the promotion has been on lockdown when it comes to naming the coaches for Season 13 of "The Ultimate Fighter."

According to Fanhouse's Mike Chiappetta, Dana White, a late addition to today's Ultimate Fight Night 23 presser (5:15 p.m. ET), is going to announce the coaches.

Who will it be?

Brock Lesnar, Frank Mir, Dominick Cruz, Miguel Torres, Urijah Faber, Chael Sonnen and Wanderlei Silva are amongst the rumored names mentioned over the last month or so.

Faber is out. He's got a fight scheduled against Eddie Wineland in March. It's "official" because he's on the poster! Torres looks to be out with a fight schedule in three weeks at UFC 126.

Did Sonnen take himself out of the mix with his guilty plea in a real estate scam and subsequent suspension?

The heavyweights seem to be the strongest possibility. Did Dana White find a way to swindle Lesnar into spending seven weeks in Las Vegas? Mir or even Roy Nelson would be a great choice as the opposing coach.

Shane Carwin, on the shelf after of surgery, doesn't have a future fight booked yet. USA Today tracked Carwin's Twitter account where he said he agreed to a Nelson fight, but that was quickly scrapped by the promotion. He's now looking at a UFC 131 return in Vancouver in June.

Are we way off base? Maybe UFC is going to pull something off that we never expected.

MMAjunkie reported yesterday that the cast will be exclusively welterweights. Taping begins at the end of this month, with the first episode scheduled to air on Mar. 30.

Junkie also thinks Gray Maynard and Frank Edgar could be the coaches. The TUF 13 Finale is slated for June 4 in Las Vegas and UFC 131 is June 14.

Training at Jackson's, Jones adopts the Diego Sanchez cartwheel

We didn't intend for today to be Jon Jones day, but this video from the Jackson's MMA Twitter feed was too fun not to share. Watch the first minute to catch Jones' tumbling skills.

Learning from campmate Diego Sanchez, Jones has adopted the "YES! Cartwheel" and turned it into the "YEAH! Cartwheel." Sanchez, a confirmed bag of crazy, has added to his psychotic persona by shaving his head, and he is still wearing his jersey from the first season of "The Ultimate Fighter."

A bit of training news is dropped at the end of the video: Strikeforce heavyweight Grand Prix participant Andrei Arlovski is working with Jackson's camp to prepare. He sparred with Rashad Evans, who is getting ready for his title bout with Mauricio "Shogun" Rua.

Brock Lesnar, Junior dos Santos to Coach 'The Ultimate Fighter'

After weeks of speculation, Dana White on Tuesday finally answered what had become the biggest mystery in MMA.

The next coaches of "The Ultimate Fighter" will be Brock Lesnar and Junior dos Santos, the UFC president told members of the media on a conference call. The two heavyweights will then meet "in June, definitely 100 percent," White said - likely on an as-yet unannounced pay-per-view expected to take place June 11 in Vancouver.

Lesnar is the former UFC heavyweight champion, but lost his title at UFC 124 in October to Cain Velasquez. Dos Santos was expected to get the next shot at Velasquez as the division's top contender. But with the new champ on the shelf with a shoulder injury, the Brazilian will instead act as a coach, then stay busy afterward with a fight against Lesnar - putting his top contender status in jeopardy in the process.

White said with Velasquez out, there would not be an interim heavyweight title. Instead, the winner of dos Santos-Lesnar will be the No. 1 contender for the most coveted title in the sport.

STRIKEFORCE NEWS: Fedor's extension, 8-man Heavyweight Grand Prix officially announced

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

LogoStrikeforce2010_105_51.png

Strikeforce's Heavyweight Grand Prix is official, as the organization - in conjunction with M-1 Global and Showtime - announced the eight man tournament, along with the multi-year contract signing for co-promoted events with M-1 Global featuring Fedor Emelianenko.

The four previously reported bouts, Fedor vs. Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva, Andrei Arlovski vs. Sergei Kharitonov, Alistair Overeem vs. Fabricio Werdum and Brett Rogers vs. Josh Barnett, were all announced as quarterfinal matchups. Fedor vs. Silva and Arlovski vs. Kharitonov will take place on February 12 in New Jersey, though the Overeem vs. Werdum and Rogers vs. Barnett fights do not yet have a date or location.

"We are thrilled to have come to a long-term agreement with Fedor and M-1 Global,? said Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker in today's release. "To have the greatest MMA fighter of all-time put his legacy on the line in a single-elimination tournament will truly captivate MMA fans worldwide. Strikeforce is home to the best heavyweight division in the world; the athlete who runs the gauntlet in a tournament such as this would have to be considered the best heavyweight fighter in the world."

The new agreement will also bring M-1 Global events to Showtime, as M-1 Global co-founder Vadim Finkelchtein commented on the deal and the new working relationship between the parties.

"I'm very pleased to be working with Showtime and Strikeforce and Mr. Coker and Mr. Hershman personally. Thanks to their interest and efforts, we've created what will go down in history as MMA's greatest heavyweight tournament of all time," said Finkelchtein. "M-1, Strikeforce and Showtime have built a partnership committed to the future growth of MMA?a sport where organizations represent a working collaborative that enable the best fighters in the world to fight each other. This agreement benefits everyone, especially the fans who'll see Fedor in action more often.

?With Showtime's significance in the U.S. and M-1's development of the European and Asian MMA markets, the cooperation will also deliver a global roster of talented fighters to viewers," Finkelchtein continued. "During the coming year, we'll be showcasing spectacular Grand Prix events using the same M-1 Selection tournament format, a series of events generating enthusiastic spectator interest keeping fans glued to their screens."

Showtime executive Ken Hershman commented on the tournament format, and pointed to Showtime's recent Super Six series in boxing as one of their recent successes with tournaments.

"I can't think of a better way to start 2011 than with this major announcement,? said Hershman. "Fedor is universally known to sports fans throughout the world and it is an honor to continue our work with M-1 Global and Strikeforce in presenting this legendary fighter to Showtime subscribers.

"Showtime has enjoyed great success with its two most recent boxing tournaments?the Super Six World Boxing Classic and The Bantamweight Tournament," Hershman continued. "And now, with the breadth of talent in the Strikeforce heavyweight division, we have the privilege of staging one of the biggest tournaments in the history of this growing sport. With the Strikeforce World Grand Prix's single-elimination format and the biggest names in the sport today, this tournament is something that no sports fan will want to miss."

Finally, Emelianenko himself commented on the tournament and the new deal, and expressed his desire to get back in action.

"I have been training very hard since my last fight and can't wait to get back in the cage," said Emelianenko. "Strikeforce has assembled a roster filled with the best heavyweights in the world and, together with M-1 Global, we have the opportunity to fight the best in a great tournament format."

Penick's Analysis: I sincerely hope that Strikeforce can pull this off without any snags by the time the finals and semifinals roll around. This will bring the two fights that make the most sense right now in Fedor vs. Bigfoot and Overeem vs. Werdum, and then depending how the tournament plays out they'd potentially have a Fedor vs. Overeem bout or a Fedor vs. Werdum rematch come as well. If Fedor gets beat, then whichever fighter beats him will already have a fight lined up. This could be a lot of fun, and provided it all goes to plan it could be a good year for Strikeforce after a disappointing 2010.
