STRIKEFORCE QUOTABLES: Scott Smith jokes that he might be crying about his weight cut at the weigh-ins for bout against Paul Daley

"I just thought this would be a new exciting way to boost my career... I was usually walking around at about 200 just because I could, and then I would just cut down a couple of weeks before the fight. I jumped right back into training after my last fight and didn't allow myself to get out of shape. I was lifting, eating, and I never got above 190. I thought it made sense to go down to 170. A big part of the decision is that I've been kind of lazy and getting away with making 185 too easy. I've been a little soft a couple of times. Fighting at 170 has forced me to diet. It's the clean diet. I have someone that cooks my meals for me, pre-packages them. I feel just as strong, if not stronger, walking around at 185 than I do walking around at 200... I might be crying about it on the day of weigh-ins, but I don't think there's any reason I shouldn't be fighting at 170."

-Scott Smith talks to MMAJunkie.com about his decision to drop to welterweight. He faces Paul Daley in his welterweight debut on December 4 in St. Louis.

Penick's Analysis: Smith has never been a big middleweight, and after convincing losses in two of his last three fights this was a move that does make a lot of sense. If he can make the cut without any ill effects, he can absolutely be competitive at welterweight, and especially so in this fight against Daley. I'm curious to see how Smith's power looks at this weight, and this should be an exciting fight on Showtime next Saturday.

If Lawler beats Lindland, then what? ... Souza? Diaz?

When Robbie Lawler is tasked with fighting another standup specialist, he usually works his way to a knockout win with his own world class fists as he did against Melvin Manhoef.  When tasked with facing a wrestling or multi level skilled fighter he has struggled in comparison, as witnessed in his loses to Renato Sobral [...]

State of the Strikeforce Middleweights

by Michael David SmithIn the last three years, the Strikeforce middleweight title has been vacated more times than it's been defended, and 2010 has been another long year for the promotion's 185-pound division. Its champion, Jake Shields, whipped its big free agent acquisition, Dan Henderson -- and then promptly bolted for the UFC. And then a much-discussed middleweight tournament failed to materialize.

But there's some hope that Strikeforce will have big fights in the year ahead, even if the middleweight division fizzled in 2010. Below we look at what some of those big fights might be and where the middleweight belt is headed as we survey the state of the Strikeforce middleweight division.
